Macula

This is a part of the retina used for sharp vision, colour and contrast.

It contains a greater number of cone receptors than other parts of the retina.

In old age the servicing of this area by the supporting tissues begins to fail. This leads to wear and tear changes of age related maculopathy.

There is a test (amsler chart) which tests this area of the retina for distortions of vision .

Sometimes special dye (FLUORESCEIN) can be injected into a vein to show the blood flowing through this area.
